CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — A 45-year-old man from White City was struck and killed by a vehicle early Tuesday morning on Foothill Road near the intersection of Corey Road in rural Central Point, according to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO).

At approximately 4:44 a.m., ECSO Dispatch received a 911 call from the driver involved in the collision. Deputies, along with responders from Jackson County Fire District 3 and Mercy Flights, arrived at the scene shortly thereafter. The victim, later identified as Matthew Edward Davenport, was transported to a local hospital but was pronounced dead at 5:42 a.m.

Authorities reported that Davenport was riding his bicycle on the shoulder of Foothill Road when he was struck by a green 2021 Toyota 4Runner traveling southbound. Investigators have stated that the driver of the Toyota is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation, and no criminal charges have been filed at this time.

The incident has left the local community shaken, and the sheriff’s office has confirmed that Davenport’s next of kin has been notified of the tragic loss. While the investigation continues, officials have not provided further details about the circumstances surrounding the crash.

This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers faced by bicyclists, particularly in rural areas where visibility may be limited, and road conditions can present additional challenges. Authorities urge all road users to remain vigilant and exercise caution while sharing the road.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to investigate the incident.
