Caring for a newborn baby is a big responsibility. So here we talk about baby care basics like how to hold your baby, change their nappy and comfort them. The early days with your new baby can feel overwhelming. Getting to know and care for your little one is a steep learning curve. Newborn babies often like to be cuddled and need to be held in a safe way that supports their head. Mums should be encouraged to have skin‑to‑skin contact with their babies as soon as possible after the birth.

But, unfortunately, this was not the case with this 31-year-old mother, later identified as Kristal. She was taken into custody and charged with murder after police said she left her 16 month old infant daughter alone for eight days while she went on vacation for 8 days.

During and interview with investigators, the mother told them she went on vacation to Puerto Rico from June 8 to June 16. The mom returned home to find her daughter unresponsive. Investigators said the 16-month-old child, Jailyn was extremely dehydrated. The toddler was taken to the County Medical Examiner. WOIO spoke with neighbors who said they would have gladly watched the child if they had been asked.

Neighbor Sulem the mother was not the typical caretaker of her daughter, and the baby was usually cared for by the grandmother. ‘Her mom always wanted to go out and just left her with her grandma and all that,’ she said. No cause of death had been released by the medical examiner as of Wednesday. Not immediately clear was the whereabouts of the deceased child’s father. Also not clear is how the mother realistically ever expected the toddler girl to take her of her own needs and had in essence sought the girl’s death.
