Medford, OR – A 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred earlier this week at the Rivers West RV Park in Myrtle Creek. Authorities responded to reports of a disturbance and gunfire at approximately 1:35 p.m. on December 7, 2024.
According to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to the RV park, located at 333 Ruckles Drive. Upon arrival, they located 29-year-old Damion Sumner of Dillard on Booth Ranch Road, just south of the park. Sumner was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders, including deputies and a Myrtle Creek police officer, administered aid to Sumner at the scene, but despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Daniel Hetrick, 22, of Myrtle Creek, was taken into custody nearby without incident. He has been charged with second-degree murder and unlawful use of a weapon. Hetrick is currently being held at the Douglas County Jail.
The Douglas County Major Crimes Team has taken over the investigation. The team is composed of detectives from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Roseburg Police Department, Oregon State Police, and the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, with additional support from Cow Creek Tribal Police.
Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances surrounding the shooting as the investigation remains ongoing. Officials have also not clarified whether the incident was related to the earlier reported disturbance at the RV park.
The community in Myrtle Creek has been left shaken by the incident, and local law enforcement is urging anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.
This case remains under active investigation.
