Grants Pass, Ore. — The Grants Pass City Council is set to vote on a resolution next week that could significantly impact the city’s approach to addressing homelessness. The council will decide on expanding resting sites for unhoused residents, following a workshop held on Tuesday, April 8.
During the meeting, Councilor Joel King proposed a motion to keep open the current resting sites at 704 NW 6th St and 712 NE 7th St, while also adding two additional sites in the parking lots next to the 6th Street location. These new sites would offer more space for individuals in need of safe places to rest overnight.
The motion was passed with six votes in favor and one against, with Councilor Rick Riker casting the dissenting vote. Councilor Indra Nicholas was absent from the meeting, and thus did not participate in the vote. The council’s approval is seen as a positive step forward in the city’s ongoing efforts to address homelessness.
The proposed resolution will be voted on at the next council meeting, scheduled for Wednesday, April 16, at 6 p.m. If the resolution is approved, the city will begin preparing the additional parking lots to accommodate the new resting sites for unhoused residents.
The city has expressed a commitment to ensuring that these sites remain accessible and safe, providing a vital resource for individuals struggling with housing insecurity.
As the city of Grants Pass continues to grapple with homelessness, the council’s decision could mark a significant milestone in providing much-needed support for its unhoused population. The outcome of next week’s vote will likely shape future discussions on homelessness and urban planning within the community.
