Buttercloud Bakery and Café Begins Reconstruction After Fire Damage

MEDFORD, Ore. – Buttercloud Bakery and Café has officially begun its rebuilding process following significant fire damage sustained last month. Co-owner Erik confirmed that construction work commenced last week, with an estimated timeline of four to six weeks for completion, followed by a brief ramp-up period before the café reopens its doors to the public.

The popular bakery, known for its homemade pastries and hearty breakfast offerings, has been closed since January 9. The closure resulted from a fire that originated at a neighboring warehouse owned by Medford Mattress, which caused extensive damage to the bakery’s premises.

The community’s response to the closure has been overwhelmingly supportive, with many locals and regular visitors expressing disappointment over the temporary loss of the beloved café. Among those affected were Kendal Halls and her father, Peter Halls, customers from Crescent City, California. The duo had traveled to Medford for a medical appointment and made a stop at Buttercloud, only to find the café closed. Kendal, who has been a loyal customer for over three years, shared how she has always appreciated the bakery’s homemade, healthy options, which she finds perfect for her father.

“Nothing is like Buttercloud,” Kendal remarked. “Everything is homemade. Everything is handcrafted. It’s just incomparable.”

Peter Halls added that their early-morning drive from Crescent City to Medford was followed by a long-standing tradition of stopping by Buttercloud for breakfast, especially since his heart attack. “We always stop here for breakfast, especially since my dad had his heart attack. We’re always looking for something healthy to eat for him,” she said.

Since the fire, numerous customers have shared similar stories of disappointment, having driven to Buttercloud only to discover the café was temporarily closed. Although the business is listed as “temporarily closed” on Google Maps, Apple Maps still shows the café as open during regular hours, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., adding to some confusion.

Buttercloud Bakery, which first moved to its current location on South Front Street in 2019, expanded to accommodate its growing customer base. Since the fire, the owners have been diligent in keeping customers informed through social media, where they expressed gratitude for the swift response of local fire crews. Despite the ongoing reconstruction, loyal patrons remain hopeful and eagerly await the café’s reopening.

As Buttercloud Bakery and Café begins its recovery, customers and community members alike look forward to the day they can once again enjoy the café’s signature breakfast dishes and fresh-baked goods.
