Medford, OR – The Oregon State Police joined law enforcement agencies across the Portland metropolitan area for a weekend traffic safety operation aimed at reducing crashes by targeting impaired and reckless drivers.
The enforcement effort, scheduled for July 24 through July 26, focused on identifying dangerous driving behaviour before it could lead to serious injuries or fatal crashes. Troopers worked alongside local agencies to increase patrols and improve road safety during the coordinated operation.
Officials said the initiative was part of an ongoing effort to reduce traffic-related deaths and serious injuries by encouraging drivers to make safer choices behind the wheel.
As part of the campaign, the Oregon State Police reminded motorists to avoid the “Fatal Five” driving behaviours that contribute to many serious crashes. Drivers were urged to obey speed limits, ensure all occupants are properly restrained with seat belts and that children are secured in appropriate safety seats, maintain their lane and avoid following other vehicles too closely, never drive while impaired, and avoid distractions such as using a mobile phone while driving.
Traffic safety officials stressed that preventing crashes is a shared responsibility and encouraged drivers to plan ahead, particularly if alcohol or other impairing substances are involved. They advised anyone who plans to drink to arrange for a sober ride home rather than getting behind the wheel.
The coordinated enforcement operation is one of several initiatives conducted throughout the year as Oregon law enforcement agencies work together to improve highway safety and reduce preventable crashes across the state.
