Coos County State Parks Closed Due to Storm Damage

Medford, OR – Several state parks in Coos County, Oregon, have been closed due to severe weather conditions, including landslides and flooding, following a powerful storm that struck the region. The closures affect Cape Arago State Park, Shore Acres State Park, and Sunset Bay State Park, causing significant disruption to visitors and campers.

The most severe damage has occurred at Cape Arago State Park and Shore Acres State Park, where a landslide has rendered Cape Arago Highway impassable. The landslide, which occurred on Friday, has undercut part of the road, preventing vehicle access to both parks. As of now, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department (OPRD) has not provided an estimated timeline for repairs to the highway, and park officials are expected to assess the extent of the damage over the weekend.

In addition to the landslide damage, Sunset Bay State Park has been impacted by flooding. The campground was evacuated early on Friday morning around 8 a.m., affecting 19 campsites with reservations. While the day-use area at Sunset Bay remains open, it could be closed if flooding conditions worsen. Restroom facilities are also unavailable, though portable toilets have been placed in the day-use area for visitors.

The storm has prompted swift action from park staff, but there is currently no word on how long the closures will last. The OPRD has yet to respond to inquiries regarding the ongoing situation, leaving visitors uncertain about when the parks might reopen.

Officials are urging visitors to stay informed through the OPRD’s official communications as they work to repair the damage and restore access to these popular coastal destinations.
