Medford Faces Winter Weather Challenges as Snowstorm Causes Road Closures

MEDFORD, Ore. – A winter storm swept through Medford Monday, causing major traffic disruptions and prompting the city’s Public Works department to mobilize its snowplows and sanders early in the day. As of 9:10 p.m., significant road closures were reported, with Stanford Avenue between Cherry and Hillcrest blocked due to multiple spun-out vehicles. Additionally, the westbound lane of Hillcrest Road from McAndrews to Urano remained closed due to hazardous conditions.

Though snowplows are not frequently needed in Medford, city crews were on the move by 3:00 a.m. to address the inclement weather. Public Works Director John Vial emphasized that priority would be given to busy roadways, key routes to hospitals, and areas that are typically more susceptible to weather-related issues.

“We focus first on the main collectors and arterials,” Vial said. “When those roads get clogged, everything else tends to follow suit. We hope to clear residential streets, but with the intensity of this storm, it’s unlikely we’ll be able to get plows out there until tomorrow.”

The storm has already caused multiple weather-related incidents on Hillcrest Road, which has been a focal point of the city’s snow response efforts. Crews are also working to remove fallen trees blocking roadways, and the city urges residents to stay clear of flagged-off areas for safety.

While snow accumulation continues, Public Works crews will remain on duty through the night, focusing on sanding and plowing major roads to ensure the safety of drivers and pedestrians. Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel and to stay updated on road conditions as the storm progresses.
