MEDFORD, Ore. — A man is behind bars after a dramatic incident Thursday night in Medford, where he crashed and flipped his car in an attempt to flee from law enforcement officers. The driver, who was on transitional leave from prison at the time of the arrest, is now facing charges related to driving under the influence.
According to the Medford Police Department (MPD), an officer initially spotted the suspect driving in the continuous left turn lane on Crater Lake Avenue. The driver, who stopped at a green light and failed to maintain his lane, caught the officer’s attention. After initiating a traffic stop at the intersection of Crater Lake and Grand Avenue, the driver fled as the officer was speaking with him.
The MPD followed the suspect as he continued to evade officers, ultimately heading toward Brookdale Avenue. At the intersection with Lone Pine Road, the driver ran a stop sign and crashed into landscaping boulders, which caused his car to flip over. The vehicle came to a stop upside down in a yard.
The driver attempted to flee on foot but was quickly apprehended by officers before he could escape. He was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for medical clearance and a court-ordered blood draw.
The test revealed that the driver had a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.14 percent—nearly twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent in Oregon. He was subsequently taken to the Jackson County Jail, where he remains in custody.
This arrest highlights the dangers of driving under the influence, particularly when combined with reckless behavior and attempts to evade law enforcement. The MPD commended the quick response of officers in safely apprehending the suspect before the situation escalated further.
