Motorcyclist Dies in High-Speed Crash on Oregon Freeway After Fleeing from Police

Medford, OR – A high-speed pursuit ended in tragedy on Tuesday morning when a 19-year-old motorcyclist, identified as Chalino Tellez Cortez of Phoenix, was killed after crashing into a semi-truck on Interstate 5.

According to the Oregon State Police (OSP), the incident occurred shortly before 11 a.m. when a Jackson County Sheriff’s deputy spotted Tellez Cortez speeding northbound on the freeway aboard a Suzuki GSX-R1000. The deputy attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but the motorcyclist refused to pull over and continued at a high rate of speed.

The pursuit took a deadly turn when Tellez Cortez collided with the trailer of a semi-truck. The force of the crash resulted in fatal injuries, and the 19-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver, who was uninjured in the collision, immediately stopped to assist and cooperated with authorities.

The Oregon State Police shut down the freeway for approximately two hours while emergency crews responded to the scene, and investigators worked to determine the exact cause of the crash. The freeway was reopened shortly after noon, though traffic delays continued in the area for some time.

Authorities have yet to release further details on the circumstances leading up to the crash, but they have confirmed that Tellez Cortez was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident. It remains unclear whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.

The Oregon State Police urge drivers, particularly motorcyclists, to always follow traffic laws and exercise caution on the road, as high-speed behavior can quickly escalate into fatal accidents.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and no charges have been filed at this time.
