Medford, Ore. — Emergency personnel in Coos County responded to a plane crash early this morning involving a small aircraft that crashed into Coos Bay after overshooting the runway at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport. The incident, which occurred around 6:12 a.m., prompted an immediate response from local fire and rescue teams.

According to officials with the North Bend Fire Department (NBFD), the aircraft, which had been attempting to land on Runway 23, skidded off the runway and came to rest about 100 feet off the eastern end of the runway in the water. Five individuals were aboard the plane at the time of the crash. Authorities confirmed that there were no fatalities, though all passengers sustained injuries and were promptly recovered from the water by emergency responders.

The individuals on board were transported to nearby medical facilities for treatment of their injuries, though their current condition has not been released.

In addition to the emergency rescue efforts, public safety crews are addressing a hazardous materials situation related to the crash. Authorities have not yet provided further details regarding the nature of the hazardous materials, but efforts are underway to contain the situation and secure the wreckage of the aircraft for removal.

As a result of the incident, commercial air traffic has been temporarily suspended on the airport’s main runway while the investigation into the crash continues. The Southwest Oregon Regional Airport remains open for other air traffic, but flights using the main runway have been diverted to ensure safety.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by local authorities and federal agencies, including the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). At this time, no further details have been released, but officials have assured the public that the investigation is ongoing.

Local authorities are asking anyone with information about the incident to come forward as they work to determine the cause of the crash.
