Medford, OR  — In the wake of a recent school shooting in Madison, Wisconsin, the Medford School District is ramping up efforts to ensure the safety of students and staff. District officials have reached out to all local school principals, stressing the importance of communication, preparedness, and consistency in maintaining a secure learning environment.

Ron Havniear, the Director of Security for Medford Schools, emphasized that an effective emergency response requires a coordinated effort from everyone involved. “No one person can command the effective response,” Havniear said. “It’s going to take the entire team being able to think in the moment of need and make decisions that make sense for them.”

Havniear explained that the district’s approach to safety is built around a team-oriented strategy, where staff members are trained to act quickly and decisively in an emergency. This training is designed to ensure that, in a crisis situation, everyone knows their role and can work together to mitigate harm.

The Medford School District already conducts regular safety drills for students, focusing on scenarios such as lockdowns and evacuations. In addition, local law enforcement agencies participate in emergency response drills, helping to integrate police and school personnel in the event of a real emergency.

The district’s emphasis on preparedness reflects growing concerns over school safety across the nation, especially after high-profile incidents like the Madison shooting. Schools are increasingly recognizing the importance of having clear, well-rehearsed protocols in place, not only to protect students but also to reassure parents and the community.

“We are focused on making sure that our staff is prepared to make the right decisions under pressure,” Havniear added. “It’s about building a culture of awareness and readiness, so that, in a moment of crisis, everyone knows how to act.”

The district’s proactive measures highlight a broader effort by schools across the country to create safer environments for learning. By prioritizing communication and teamwork, Medford aims to strengthen its emergency response capabilities and ensure that students, teachers, and families feel secure.

As safety concerns continue to dominate national discussions, the Medford School District remains committed to refining its protocols, aiming to stay ahead of potential threats and minimize risks to its school community.
