Oregon’s Efforts to Strengthen Wildfire Resilience with Firewise USA Program

Oregon continues to lead the nation in efforts to enhance wildfire resilience, boasting the second-highest number of Firewise USA sites in the country. As of 2024, the state is home to 298 active Firewise sites, with 32 new sites added over the past year. This initiative is part of Oregon’s ongoing commitment to reduce wildfire risks and protect communities across the state.

The Firewise USA program, designed to help communities become more resilient to wildfires, is a national initiative managed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The program offers resources and guidance tailored to homeowners, helping them implement fire prevention strategies while also encouraging broader community planning. Its co-sponsors, the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Forest Service, have supported its efforts nationwide.

Within Oregon, Jackson County stands out for its exceptional participation in the program. With 74 Firewise sites, the county ranks fourth in the nation for the highest number of active Firewise communities. This reflects the growing awareness and proactive stance against wildfire threats in Southern Oregon, where the risk of fire is ever-present due to the region’s dry summer conditions.

One of the notable highlights of Southern Oregon’s Firewise efforts is the creation of the first Firewise site that spans two states. Located in Lake County, along the Oregon-California border, this site serves as an example of cross-border collaboration in wildfire prevention and resilience building.

The Firewise USA program is administered in Oregon by the Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), which has played a crucial role in guiding communities toward adopting best practices for wildfire mitigation. Through its work with local leaders and residents, the ODF ensures that Firewise sites meet the necessary criteria, including creating defensible spaces around homes, utilizing fire-resistant building materials, and fostering neighborhood-wide engagement in fire prevention efforts.

With the threat of wildfires becoming an ever-increasing concern, Oregon’s active participation in the Firewise USA program showcases the state’s dedication to protecting its communities and landscapes. As the state adds more sites and continues to prioritize fire resilience, the Firewise initiative remains a vital tool in reducing the risks associated with wildfires and safeguarding lives and property.
