Medford, OR — Two Oregon residents were arrested on Saturday for allegedly impersonating firefighters while attempting to enter an evacuation zone in the Palisades Fire area. The suspects, Dustin Nehl, 31, and Jennifer Nehl, 44, were taken into custody by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies after a fire truck, marked with the name of a fictitious fire department, was spotted attempting to access the restricted zone.
According to law enforcement, the fire truck displayed the label of the ‘Roaring River Fire Department,’ which was later determined to be nonexistent. Authorities learned that the truck had been purchased at an auction and was not affiliated with any legitimate firefighting organization. The deputies observed the Nehls wearing full firefighting turnout gear, including CAL-Fire t-shirts, helmets, and radios, which led to suspicions of their identity.
Upon further questioning, the suspects reportedly admitted to entering the evacuation zone on Friday. Investigators revealed that Dustin Nehl has a criminal history in Oregon, including previous charges for criminal mischief and arson, though neither of the suspects has a record in California.
The fire truck was impounded, and both individuals were booked on charges of impersonating a firefighter and unlawfully entering an evacuation zone. The case is currently under review by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, and investigators are expected to present their findings on Tuesday.
