Medford, OR — The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) officially declared the start of fire season today at 12:01 a.m., affecting approximately 1.8 million acres of forestland across Jackson and Josephine counties. The initial fire danger level is set to “low,” with the Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) beginning at Level I.
Recent weather patterns in the region have shifted from wet conditions to warmer, drier weather, contributing to an increase in fire activity. So far, ODF reports 12 fires have ignited, burning a total of 22 acres.
With the onset of fire season, the department has imposed several restrictions to mitigate the risk of wildfires. Prohibited activities include debris burning, fireworks, exploding targets, and the use of tracer ammunition on or near ODF-protected lands.
Campfires are permitted only within designated campgrounds or when landowner permission is obtained. Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles traveling on improved roads or boats on the water.
For industrial operations, a Firewatch is mandatory under IFPL Level I, unless otherwise waived by ODF officials. This requirement aims to ensure immediate response in case of fire ignition.
Residents and visitors seeking further information or clarification are encouraged to contact the ODF Southwest Oregon District offices located in Central Point at (541) 664-3328 or Grants Pass at (541) 474-3152.
