MEDFORD, Ore. — Kim Dyer, a 73-year-old man from Phoenix, has pleaded guilty to several felony charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor. Dyer entered the guilty plea in Jackson County Circuit Court on Wednesday, acknowledging his involvement in crimes that occurred over a three-year period, from 2018 to 2021.

Dyer was initially indicted on seven felony charges, including attempted sexual abuse, coercion, and attempted sodomy. According to court documents, between October 2018 and October 2021, Dyer unlawfully subjected a victim, under the age of 14, to sexual contact. In addition, he is accused of coercing the victim to remain silent about the abuse, threatening harm or false accusations against others if she spoke out.

As part of the plea agreement, Dyer admitted guilt to three of the felony charges: Attempted Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, Coercion, and Attempted Sodomy in the First Degree. In a written statement submitted to the court, he acknowledged his actions and agreed to accept the sentence outlined by state guidelines. The potential punishment could include up to 20 years in prison and fines of up to $500,000.

Though the defense has requested a sentence of three years of supervised probation, the court will ultimately decide on the final sentence. If probation is granted, Dyer would be subject to numerous conditions, including no contact with the victim or any minors without the approval of the Probation Office. Other stipulations would require Dyer to undergo counseling, sex offender treatment, polygraph testing, HIV/DNA testing, and to register as a sex offender. He may also be required to pay restitution if damages are determined.

The case, filed in October 2022, has been delayed multiple times, with five continuances granted before Dyer entered his guilty plea. The legal proceedings have garnered significant attention, given the severity of the charges and the impact on the victim.

If Dyer violates the terms of his probation, he could face up to 78 months in prison with the Oregon Department of Corrections. A sentencing hearing will be scheduled in the coming weeks.
