Bear Creek Greenway Off-Pavement Areas to Close June 1 for Fire Season

MEDFORD, Ore. — All off-pavement areas of the Bear Creek Greenway will close beginning June 1 as Jackson County prepares for the 2025 fire season. The closure, announced by Jackson County Roads and Parks, is aimed at reducing the risk of wildfire along the popular recreational corridor.

The Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF) declared last week that fire season will officially begin June 1 for Jackson and Josephine counties. In response, county officials are implementing preventative measures, including limiting access to areas of the Greenway that pose heightened fire danger.

“We want folks to use the trail for biking, walking, running, and any other recreational use that allows them to remain on the paved portion of the trail,” said Steve Lambert, Director of Jackson County Roads and Parks. “We maintain vegetation within ten feet of the paved path to lower fire risk.”

The Bear Creek Greenway, which stretches through several communities in the Rogue Valley, has been the site of multiple wildfires in recent years. Officials say the seasonal closure of off-pavement areas is part of a broader strategy to protect both natural resources and nearby neighborhoods.

“The greenway is a special place and serves our community on many levels,” Lambert added. “This off-pavement seasonal closure, along with other fuel mitigation efforts we are focusing on, is a very important part of our county’s effort to prevent a fire in this urban corridor.”

The restrictions will remain in effect until the ODF declares the official end of the 2025 fire season, which typically comes later in the year depending on weather conditions.

Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow posted signs and stay informed through the county’s website and local news outlets.
