CENTRAL POINT, Ore. — Fire agencies from across Southern Oregon and Northern California convened at the Jackson County Expo for their annual conference, where they shared insights, discussed new technologies, and strengthened partnerships ahead of the fire season. The event provided an opportunity for experts and first responders to collaborate, prepare for the challenges of the upcoming year, and ensure that they are equipped with the latest firefighting tools and strategies.

The conference is an annual tradition for agencies in the region, offering a platform to review the previous fire season, identify areas for improvement, and discuss innovations in firefighting technology. According to Natalie Weber, a public information officer for the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Southwest District, the event plays a crucial role in fostering long-term cooperation between Southern Oregon and Northern California agencies.

“We’ve had a long history of great partnerships between the fire agencies in both states, simply because we work together so often,” Weber said. “When fire season arrives, and we inevitably end up on a fire together, there’s that sense of familiarity — ‘I know you, I’ve met you, I know who to call.’ It makes it a lot easier to navigate those chaotic moments.”

This year’s conference highlighted the importance of building relationships before the fire season begins. The goal is to ensure that when responders face a crisis, they can quickly and effectively coordinate with one another. The event also offered an opportunity for agencies to address gaps from the previous season and stay informed about the latest trends and technologies in firefighting.

“As things evolve, new technologies emerge, and people come into new roles,” Weber explained. “We want to close any gaps and make sure that everyone is familiar with each other. By shaking hands and making those connections, we can face the tense moments on the fire line with a little more comfort.”

Throughout the conference, various vendors showcased products and services designed to enhance firefighting efforts. Drones, personal protective equipment, and other innovative tools were displayed, offering agencies valuable resources that could be deployed in the field during wildfire responses. These technological advancements, along with the collaborative spirit of the conference, ensure that agencies are well-prepared to tackle the challenges of the coming fire season.

The annual conference serves as a reminder of the critical need for fire agencies to work together and share knowledge, especially as the frequency and intensity of wildfires continue to rise. With a strong foundation of cooperation and the latest tools at their disposal, Southern Oregon and Northern California’s fire responders are ready to face the challenges of the upcoming season head-on.
