KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. – The Klamath County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning to the public about an ongoing Bitcoin and investment scam targeting local residents. Authorities say scammers are posing as law enforcement, government representatives, or tech support in an attempt to pressure victims into purchasing cryptocurrency.
According to the sheriff’s office, the fraudsters are using deceptive tactics, claiming that the purchase of Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies is necessary to secure or protect funds. In some cases, the scammers have threatened victims with arrest or other legal consequences if they refuse to comply.
The sheriff’s office stressed that legitimate law enforcement officials will never request cryptocurrency investments, demand payments in Bitcoin, or threaten individuals with arrest over financial transactions.
“Scammers often create a sense of urgency and fear to manipulate their victims into acting quickly without fully understanding the situation,” said a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office. “We want to remind the public to stay alert and verify any unsolicited communication, especially when it involves money or sensitive information.”
Authorities are urging residents to report any suspicious activity or encounters with potential scammers. In addition, individuals who receive calls or messages requesting cryptocurrency payments are advised to hang up and contact their local law enforcement agency directly to verify the situation.
The sheriff’s office also recommends that people educate themselves on common scams and be cautious when dealing with unfamiliar or unsolicited offers, particularly those involving digital currencies.
