Medford, OR – Traffic in southern Oregon has been severely impacted following the closure of Interstate 5 (I-5) earlier today. While the closure has since been lifted, significant delays persist as both northbound and southbound traffic struggle to move over Siskiyou Summit. Currently, the only remaining closure is on OR-273, which is shut down between mileposts 0 and 12. In addition, OR-66 is facing a conditional closure between mileposts 6.5 and 50.6, though it remains open under certain conditions.
In Medford, hazardous driving conditions are being reported due to freezing temperatures, which have left roads coated with ice. City officials have issued a warning urging residents to stay home unless absolutely necessary. For those who must travel, extra caution is advised. Drivers are encouraged to reduce their speed, allow additional travel time, and be mindful of the slick roads that are expected to remain icy until temperatures rise later in the day.
The situation has been compounded by a partial road closure on Spring Street between Modoc and Gardendale. This section has been reduced to a single lane due to communication lines obstructing the roadway. Commuters are advised to find alternative routes to avoid further delays.
Adding to the disruptions, the northbound lanes of I-5 remain closed at North Yreka due to icy conditions. As of now, there is no estimated reopening time, causing further detours for travelers heading north.
